THE MYSTERIOUS AMATEUR TRAMP

A One Act Play

THE AMATEUR TRAMP – Aidan de Brune
(Born Herbert Charles Cull)
A Walk of over 10,000 Miles Around Australia
A significant Australian Story that was lost, but now found
thanks to Colin Choat (Project Gutenberg) and Trove (Australian digitalised newspapers).

The Mysterious Amateur Tramp is the World debut performance
at Garrick Theatre in Guildford, Western Australia performed in February 2024.
This significant Australian story that had been lost was recently rediscovered in 2018.

This play is the reimagining of the extraordinary walk of journalist and mystery crime writer
Aidan de Brune – the first person to walk solo and unassisted around the perimeter of Australia – and survive.
20 September 1921 to 4th March 1924.
10,600 miles, 29 months and countless boots.

Everywhere he walked people signed his travel diary, evidencing his presence at the places he passed through.
There was more to Aidan than anyone truly knew: Who was he? What was he escaping or trying to find?
What conversations took place along the way – with others and himself?

The play is written by Jenny Davis OAM based on the research and book ‘The Amateur Tramp’ by Colin Choat of Project Gutenberg.
With collaboration and directed by Melanie DeCull.

This recording was one of 7 performances at the Garrick Theatre in February 2024.
The season was highly well received with full audiences and during a heat wave in Perth.
The recording will never do the live performance complete justice.

Featuring: Andy Peckover, Sarah House, Peter Neaves and Jacob Peckover.

At the Garrick Theatre there is no control over outside noises like traffic, airplanes and trains.
