Welcome to Appleton, a tidy country town with a population of 1557. Stop in at the pub in the arvo, try your luck with the pokies and why not stay for the annual Potato Race?
It’s the highlight of the year. Only this year Dr Penny Anderson is back home in Appleton, and she has a question. Why should the prize money for the race be $1000 for the men but only $200 for the women?
Penny, with the help of some locals, makes the whole town take notice!
Playwright Melanie Tait takes real-life events and brings us a warm comedy showing the world that there’s more than one way to win a race.
This is a rehearsed play reading.

THE APPLETON LADIES’ POTATO RACE – A Play Reading
Written by Melanie Tate
Directed by Katja & Caitlin Maxx
ONE DAY ONLY – Saturday 28th February 2026, 2pm & 7.30pm.
When Penny Anderson moves back to Appleton as the local GP and discovers that the prize for the town’s famous Potato Race is $1000 for men, but only $200 for women, she decides to do something about it. It takes a while to get other women on side, but when she does the whole town takes notice.
Based on a real Australian story, this play is about justice, equality… and being courageous. It’s also funny – and heart-warming.
Content Warning: This show contains strong language, and deals with topics of Racism, Homophobia and Misogyny.

HMS PINAFORE
Written by Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert
Directed by Christine O’Keeffe & Naomi Degabriele
Performing 9, 16, 23, 30 MAY 2026, 2pm & 7.30pm.
A cross between ‘Titanic’ (without the sinking) and ‘The Love Boat’, HMS Pinafore promises a rollicking good time for audiences and cast alike.
Tongue-twisting songs, instantly hummable tunes, outrageous plot twists and social satire are against the “mostly authentic” historical backdrop of the late 19th century English Navy.

ARE YOU BEING SERVED ?
Written by B. David Croft & Jeremy Lloyd
Directed by Sean Duff
Performing 1, 8, 15, 22 AUGUST 2026, 2pm & 7.30pm.
A light-hearted observation of the lives of the staff of the fictional department store Grace Brothers.
The play focuses on interpersonal relationships and events affecting the running of the store. The script is to some extent a parody of the British class system, evidenced by the use of the characters’ titles & surnames, rather than their Christian names.
The play features sexual innuendo, misunderstandings, mistaken identity, farce, sight gags and occasional slapstick. It is laced with double entendres and is distinctly a snapshot of its time and place, 1970s Britain.

TRAVELING NORTH
Written by David Williamson
Directed by Steven Wimmer
Performing 7, 14, 21, 28 NOVEMBER 2026, 2pm & 7.30pm.
Frank is 70. He wants to ‘travel north’ to escape the cold. Frances, his girlfriend, is 20 years younger and is worried about leaving her daughters, who think Frank just wants someone to look after him.
They could be right – but Frances takes the chance and they move to a rustic, rundown cottage in North Queensland where they meet Freddy, a helpful neighbour, and the local doctor Saul… who picks up on Frank’s heart condition. It appears life isn’t going to be quite as easy as they thought!
Written in the 1970s, this is one of David Williamson’s more serious plays albeit with some of Davidson’s distinctive one-liners. It’s about love, aging – and the complexities of family relationships.
